SAVE OUR PLANET!

When we had the C.O.W we did a 5 for 5 video on how to protect our trees. We need them because they help produce air, provide shade, a place for birds to live and some grow fruit for us so we can eat it. Heres our video hope you enjoy

Tidy Kiwis Vs Untidy Kiwis

This is our iMovie we made using the one of the C.O.W Mac airbooks. It's about an untidy kiwi disrespecting the bush. Hopefully you don't do this. Watch a tidy kiwi does and learn from it.

TIDY ENVIRONMENT VS POWERFULL POLLUTION

Me (Oliver) and Felix made this video about why we should keep our environment tidy. It is a 5 for 5 video. Its about a messy kiwi and tidy kiwi crossing paths. We had a lot of fun making this video. We hope you enjoy the video.

MAD SCIENTISTS!

In Room 13 we did this thing called 5 for 5. You had to do 5 scenes that were 5 seconds. We made a video called MAD SCIENTISTS. In Room 13 had an experiment where we made CO2 gas. CO2 stands for carbon dioxide. So we did a video and filmed us making carbon dioxide, we had to admit that we sort of looked like GEEKS! This video is a version of what we did. ENJOY!

Xaviers Trip!

On  friday I  went to Tiritiri Matangi Island.
We went on the ferry at 9.00 am and had morning tea on the ferry.
We arrived at 10.15 and get in groups of 9 people.
I saw a  Tui, it was black and small.
We did a treasure hunt, it was exciting.
After the guided walk we had lunch next to the lighthouse.
The groups did different activities and learned interesting facts about native birds.
Unfortunately, we did not see a kiwi because it wakes up at night. Anyway, I enjoyed the trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island.
All the children arrived back at 5.00pm in front of the school.

A 'MONDAY' in the Life of Room 13.....

To start the day we set up our class by putting our bags away, putting the chairs down, rolling the blinds up to let in the golden sun. While we wait for the school day to start at 8:55am we can go outside and play, we can use the iPads and computers in our class, hold Cheeko (he is our class pet rat) and we can do some quiet reading, drawing or writing. But for the last few weeks we have been watching the Americas Cup as racing starts at 8:10am. We hope Team NZ win soon.

When the bell goes we come in, sit on the mat and call the roll. After that we discuss the timetable for the day and we start with fitness. Reading is the first thing that follows fitness and we do that until about 10:30am. Writing is next and we have been learning to write a narrative. This is followed by morning tea where we can have a bite to eat and have a play!

After morning tea we continue a little bit with writing and then get into maths. To finish of the middle block we go to the library to chose books for the week. And then its one of our favourite parts of the day... LUNCH TIME!

After lunch we do SSR for about 10mins (Sustained Silent Reading). Our day is finished with sharing our homework from the previous week and getting the new weeks homework and spelling ready. Then the bell goes at 3pm.

And that is a typical 'MONDAY' in the life of Room 13.

 Cheeko our class pet

The BEP's are hard at work this morning!

Room 13s Chopper Challenge!

Today (Wednesday 18 Sept) we did the one and only......  WESTPAC CHOPPER CHALLENGE! We are doing fitness to raise money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The top fundraisers get a ride in the helicopter for their efforts, how cool is that! Duncan and Kimi our instructors gave us a pep talk before we started. First we did the vertical hang, where we needed to free hang for 60 secs on our playground. After hanging around we did a shuttle race where we worked together to move weights up and down the obstacle course. Next we did the stretcher carry where we carried a patient (pretend of course) 50 metres, that was very tiring. We finished off the challenge with 30 sit-ups, 25 push-ups, 25 burpees and 30 star-jumps. To celebrate the completion we finished off with a game of tugger war. Overall it was challenging as expected, awesome and loads of FUN!

Heres a video of us in ACTION!

Don't Give Up a message from Jack and Wyatt

We have been given the task to find a song that most suits our community and country. We have a thing called the 3 R's respect responsibility and resilience. Today we have chosen resilience ,this is what the song represents. Here are some sentences about why we chose this song hope you enjoy.
We think its  great song to represent room 13. we thought it represents our country and community NZ and grey lynn.  here is the song we chose ENJOY. This song is a minecraft  parody of Fly by rehana

Minecraft is a sand box video game.  It's come a long way to what it's like today. This video doesn't have the real graphics but its real gameplay. The main objective is to survive by mining, crafting, building and defending yourself from zombies skeletons spiders and creepers.
this is Jack and wyatt big Minecraft fans

5 places you should see.

These are some places you should see.

The first place you should see is Eden park.
Eden park is really cool because the World Cup was placed there. And two days ago the 14th of september the All Blacks played against South Africa. Its funny because last year in room 16 we did a dance to represent a country that Kate  chose.  She chose .... SOUTH AFRICA. Here is a picture of Eden park.

The second place you should see is Mount Eden Mountain.
My opinion is that Mount Eden mountain is really cool because if you don't want to climb up the mountain there is a little well big play ground you can play on. And if you do want to climb up there there is a gigantic hole at the top. I think you would die if you jumped in the hole.  But there is grass at the bottom and there is chains saying 'DO NOT CROSS'.Its also cool because another name to call the mountain is Maungawhau. Maunga means mountain and whau  is a plant  which was on the mountain now its re planted down the bottom.

The third place you should look at is going to Clip n Climb in Mount Eden.
Clip n Climb is really fun to have a birthday. My little cousin Leonard went there for his birthday I think we stayed there for an hour and a  half. My favorite climbing block is the colour  block. At first I was scared I would fall off but I was holding on wrong. My favorite part of that day is jumping off the block I just climbing. Here are some things you can climb there.

The second too last place you should go is MOTAT.
Motat is really super duper fun. Motat is super duper fun because if your a history kind of person Motat is were you should be and if your a challenge sort of person Motat is also the place to be.If your a history kind of person you should go to Motat and see a really old train, cars, bikes, tractors and even get a ride on the tram thats how cool Motat is and if your a challenge sort of person you should go to Motat and go to the challenge zone, tec tile zone and mirror maze. If you are one or another of these Motat is were you should be.Im a challenge sort of person and I like the mirror maze tec tile zone and I like the challenge zone. Are you a challenge person thats up for a challenge or are you a history person that loves history.?

Last but not least you should go to GREY LYNN SCHOOL.
Grey lynn school is really cool because we have 2 parks soon we might get another one in the school forest we have a pool we have a new block for the Puriri. We have 3 teams in our school Puriri,Pohotukawa and Tortara. When you turn 5 years old  you would be a year 1 and you would be in Puriri team, then when your 6 or 7 years old you would be year 2 and 3 you would be in Pohotukawa
then when your 8,9 and 10 you would be year 4,5 and 6 then you are in Totara. This is what my school looks like.

Ponsonby Road Show

On Tuesday the 3rd of September all of the Totara Team went to go see the Ponsonby Road Show on our court. There was guitars,  keyboards, microphones, drums, and lots of other instruments. They also had mats on the court for the cheerleaders. First the orchestra played and a boy sang and then parts of band played and different people sang. After that there were three boys dressed in black and they did a very short samoan slap dance and there music was from a woodblock. Then Fay (the presenter who came to Grey Lynn school last year) introduced two girls and they did really amazing things with their bodies. They also did a bit of ballet. Next was a group that were wearing fairy costumes and dancing with them were the three boys that danced before but this time a girl was dancing with them. There was a girl singing a song when every else was dancing. The song was about  her telling them to get together and stop fighting over her. Then the first band came on they were called Naughts and Crosses they had really great singers. Fay came on again like she did between every act and introduced Dr. Pepper (a 12 year old boy) came on and asked for an asistent Fay chose Queenie. First he did a hand trick and then he did a trick with his briefcase and then Queenie got a chocolate. After that a band came on called the Thursdays and the funny thing was that they acherly had there band practise on Thursdays. Last of all they had the cheerleaders come on they were throwing people up in the air and catching them doing back flips and every thing. Then Hannah performed some gymnastic things and then we all had a good dance here are some of the videos.

Kiwi Kapers!

Yay its Wednesday I'm going to Kiwi kapers its a orchestra if you didn't know that. Ros the music teacher took 30 people from grey lynn school. I'm really lucky because I was one of those 30 people. first of all I will tell you where we sat we sat in the town hall up high we had great seats. First the strings section played, I quite liked that because it was piano and forte that means loud and soft. They played superman and batman and alot more other songs my favourite was batman. There are alot of instruments in the orchestra like the cello, violin, viola, double base and more. The sections in the orchestra are percussion, strings, brass and woodwind. There were 2 parent helpers they were a girls mum called Rachel and a boys mum named Ang. I thought the organ was pretty cool he played the lowest pipe it only vibrated because it was so low. I LOVED IT.

Stella and Felix were the mc`s for the speech finals an Liesel and Mr Barker were the judges. The people that got into the finals were Holly doing her speech on why her uncle should stop smoking and then Paloma doing her speech on why you should be a vegeterian. The third person was Lotta doing her speech on why things shouldnt be called man made they should be person made. After Lotta it was Leo doing his speech on why you should stop whaling. Then we had Emily doing hers on why we should stop poaching animals. There was one that I quite liked which was Jamie`s she was doing hers on why we shouldn`t do Homework I would agree with her on that. The last person that we had was kaia doing hers on why kids shouldn`t be forced to eat poridge and after everyone had finished they announced the winner and the winner was Emily. Then the judges gave them all a certificate. I think did a great job because I would be nervous if I had to stand up and do my speech in front of the all the parents and all the year 4s.

ABC Helpers

Room 13s buddy class is Room 4 and we have been doing a program called ABC Helpers. We help them to learn to be better readers and writers. We help them write by getting two white boards (1 for our buddy and 1 for us). We help them read by getting him/her a book from their book box. We also bring a book up every day to read with them. One of Room 13s reading groups goes up to Room 4s class and we pick a buddy to read and write with. It is a lot of fun when we read to them, when they read to us and when we read to them. Normally the book we will bring is our journal that we are reading or otherwise a Dr. Seuss book

Here are some photos of my ABC buddy and my friend Jacks ABC buddy. My buddy was called hugo when I last went.

The Awesome Mac Book Airs!

Hi my name is Tama

Room 13 have had these awesome mac book laptops for last two weeks. In the Totara team each week they get passed on to room 11, room 12, room 14, and room 15. The past few days we have been blogging on these laptops. The best thing about that there is ten mac book laptops for everyone to work on we have safari, kid pix, photo booth, iTunes, face talk, iPhoto and all kinds of apps.
Well I feel kind of fantastic writing my blog on these mac book laptops. So what does the lap tops look like its like the hole cover is silver and the camera on the top of the middle. so lets get in to more things that the class does with them. We do some research for the speeches we go on safari took photos on the awesome photo booth, and record our maths strategies to share.
So thats the blog of the awesome mac books, for now!

INVENTIONS!

Room 13 were given the task of writing a list of their top 10 inventions out of all the pieces of technology created. Here is our class top ten:

Room 13's Top Ten:

Car
Computer
The Wheel
Electricity
Paper
Clothing/Shoes
Toilet
Lightbulb
Internet
Telephone

We each had to do a project about what we thought the best invention was and why. We had some interesting topics. We had to answer a few questions like who was the inventor, when and where it was invented and was it a successful invention. We could present our project anyway we thought would be best. We have computer projects, posters, booklets and models. These are some of the e-learning projects that we did.

More to come plus there are loads of others in Room 13, come check them out!

The Rat Cheeko

There is a new member to our classroom and he is Uala's pet rat. His name is Cheeko he used to have a brother named Sanchez but he past away. Cheeko has a tail that feels like leather. Cheeko is very special to us because he is our class pet and Ualas pet. Uala loves Cheeko more than anything. Cheeko likes to eat popcorn, ice cream cones, peas and corn. Cheeko does not like people to crowd around him or to much noise around him. He has very sharp teeth so fingers away otherwise they get bitten off. Cheeko loves to sleep and everyone wants to hold him because his fur is so soft it  feels like silk or cotton wool. Every week there are two new rat monitors that refill his water bottle and food bowl. At the moment the rat monitors are Georgia and Harry at first it was Uala because he is Cheeko's owner. Cheeko is a very very funny rat. Cheeko likes to hide in hoodies, jumpers ,pockets and in armpits.

Here is a video of me holding Cheeko...

For the past few weeks we have been training extremely hard. We have been running non-stop for ten minutes around the school every morning. We have been totaling our distance as a class and we made it to Cape Reingas' lighthouse. Our new goal is to get back to Kaitaia from Cape Reinga before Wednesday. Here is where we are now....

Cape Reinga

We made it to Cape  Reinga! Room 13 has officially  made it to Cape Reinga, today we ran our best distance as a class, in ten minutes we 52.75Km (well I was walking I had cold). All togeather our class ran a total of 455km isn't that great !!! I think we did stupendous we even had 29km spare because its only 426Km from School to the Cape. We used that to get to the light house we still had loads of km left I think we travelled half of Auckland pretty cool. I think this is pretty impressive and also very tiring.

By Felix
This is the way we ran!

This is where we got to!

My Best Goal EVER!

On Sunday we played our first game of flippa ball against a team called the Water Sharks. In our team we have Felix, Maya, Kaia and Holly who are in my class. It was there first time playing flippa ball. We had a great time and won the game 1-0. I scored the goal it reminded me about the time I scored my best goal EVER. I was at a flippa ball game with my team in Term 1. We were against the Good Shepard's. No team has ever beaten them and we didn't either. I was in attack with Ethan then the ball smashed infront of Ethan he picked it up and passed me the ball very quickly and it landed in the water with a splash.  Then the Good Shepard's defence came charging towards me I picked up the ball as fast as I could but just as I looked up the goalie came stepping towards me. I lifted up the ball and through the ball right into the goal. That was the only goal we scored that day.

Extra Week of Holidays

On the last day of school I did not have to go to school because my plane flight was that day. On the plane it was awesome because I got to eat a lollie and a cookie and drink some water. When we landed  in Dunedin we slept at my dad's friends' house we stayed there for 3 nights'. One of those days we went to a chocolate  factory we got to see 1 tone of chocolate fall. After Dunedin we went to Queenstown. In Queenstown we went up a mountain on a gondola and at the top of the mountain we went on a luge it was awesome. The next place we went to was Wanaka. In Wanaka they have an awesome thing called Puzzling World we went there.  First we went in some illusion rooms they where werid and scary then we went into the great maze it took me 30 minutes to do the maze the rest of the family about 45 minutes to do the maze. The next place we went to was Christchruch there we went to the antarctic centre. We went into this room which had snow and was -8 degrees we also saw little blue penguins and watched a 3D movie it was funny because when a bird did a poo water came into your face. The next day we went to arhana park we got to see a chttah run 100 k per hour  the next place we went to was kikria we saw about 133 wild seals. The next place we went to was Picton the top of the South island. The next day we got on the ferry in 3 hours we were in wellington we went inside the beehive and on the cable cars and got to go into a pool the next day we drove to Taupo. And then we were in Auckland. The whole trip took 3 weeks and 1 day.

Journey to Cape Reinga

In room 13 we recently just started counting up how far people in room 13 were running for cross country practice, well okay not just recently about a week ago. So lets get on with the story now we kind of took the idea off room 12. Each lap around is about 250m and we tally up how many laps we do then convert that into metres and add them all up. Anyway on Wednesday the 15th of May our total km run is 189Km. I thought that was great we are trying to get up to Cape Reinga its the top of New Zealand. We took some photos of where we got up to on the map. We have gone past Whangarei and Hikurangi. The next run we will probably pass Paihia. Uala and me counted up what we got up to, today we ran 41.25Km altogether, I think we went pretty far well thats what i thought if you ask me. When we are running my normal amount of laps I would go is about 5 or 6 laps in ten minutes, thats how long we run for. I like doing the running because we do not have to do work for ten minutes, now I find that Impressive.

Tip Top Factory Tour

In the holidays I went to the tip top factory were they make all the ice cream. I went with Ella my au pair, my Mum, Sienna, Zara and Mikayla 3 sisters. I went on wednesday the 1st of may 2013. We saw all the machines the lady also asked the men that were walking past if they had taken any ice cream because otherwise they would destroy the whole pack. Did you know that they make at least 1000 meltdowns in 1 second. We saw them all getting packed up. After that we went and watched a movie on cameras around the factory and had a free ice cream. I had a hokey pokey meltdown ice cream, yum yum. I felt really excited before hand and then had an awesome time.

Seeing Ourselves!

Today Room 13 went to the Corbans Art Centre to learn about portrait painting. We meet Joy and Ann-Sophie who taught us about sketching and painting self-portraits. We learnt about painting a 'Bust' self-portrait, a bust portrait is a portrait from your head to your shoulders. We really enjoyed going and found it to be a lot of fun.

We learnt....
- that your face is more than just one colour
- how to blend colors
- how to use smiley faces and two tear drops to draw a nose
- that our face is an egg shape, not a circle, square or an oval
- how to draw eyes using smiley faces and eyelashes
- how to paint
- that we need to take our time and enjoy the art
- how to sketch using charcoal
All in all we learnt how to do better portraits of ourselves.

WATCH US GROW!

In Room 13 this year lots of our learning will be based around the big idea of 'GROWTH'. We have discussed different ways that we will grow and ways we want to grow.

Here are some of our ideas....

Our maths knowledge will grow
Our bodies will grow and get bigger
Our brain will grow from things we will learn
Science knowledge will grow
Hopefully our energy levels will grow
Our Art skills will grow
Our word banks will grow
We will be able to read bigger words
We will grow more brave as the year goes on to experience challenging things.

Please join us on our blog page throughout the year and see how our growth is coming along
